C-209 Chapter 1 Homework
AP Biology Period 7

Vocabulary
Sampling error - Errors that happen because only part of the experiment is directly contacted. With any sample, differences would probably exist between the characteristics of the sampled experiment and the larger group from which the sample was chosen.
Homeostasis - Living organisms use homeostasis to regulate it’s internal environment to maintain stable, constant conditions.
Theory - The analysis of a set of facts in their relation to one another.
Hypothesis - a proposed explanation for an observable phenomenon.
Variable - a symbol that stands for a value that may vary.
Control Setup(group) - The baseline of the experiment, making sure there are no other factors that could affect the outcome.
Experimental(group) - a group of items under study to determine the effect of certain events, substances, etc.
Mass - The weight of a variable.
Volume - how much three-dimensional space a variable occupies
Collaboration - two or more groups or organizations working together to achieve the same goal.
Bias - Preference towards a particular perspective.
1. Name and describe the characteristics of life.
Cells - Every living things has one or more cells
Organization - Every living thing is a big mass of cells formed to make an organism
Energy Use - All organisms use energy
Homeostasis - All organisms maintain their inner environments to maintain a stable, constant condition.
Growth - All organisms grow.
Reproduction - All living things reproduce
2. Design an experiment. Name the control group, experimental group, and the variable.
Variable - Plants
See how light affects plants. Put 3 plants near a light source (window), put 3 plants in a dark closet. Water them all the same amount of water.
3. Come up with a non-scientific statement. Apply all of the C.O.N.P.T.T. criteria to the statement. Be sure to explain why it meets or does not meet each step.
Water is wet
Consistent: No, fish can be dry.
Observable: Yes, you can feel if they are wet/dry.
Natural: Yes, follows rules of nature.
Predictable: Yes, I can predict if the fish will be wet or not.
Testable: Not really, because there really is no definition to “Wet”
Tentative: Yes, It is subject to change, because fish can also be dry.’
4. In a test, data on the heights of ten men the same age were collected. 5 men in the experimental group had taken growth hormone and their heights were 67 in., 73 in., 70 in., 69 in., and 72 in. 5 people in the control group did not take growth hormone and their heights were 67 in., 68 in., 72 in., 73 in., and 66 in. Organize this data into a chart with labels and an explanation of why you organized your chart the way you did. Also analyze the data and decide what you can conclude.

The growth hormone affects everybody differently; it works for some people, and it doesn’t for others. In most cases, people who took the hormone are talle
Without hormone average: 69.2
With hormone average: 70.2
